Website Maintenance for Local Businesses
The work nobody does, until something breaks.
Most local-business websites get built once and then drift. Plugins go out of date, SSL certificates expire silently, contact forms break unnoticed, page speed degrades, broken links accumulate. The fix isn't a quarterly project — it's ongoing care, done by someone monitoring proactively. We do that. Honestly, transparently, and at a price that actually makes sense for a Cambridgeshire SME.
The pain we keep hearing
- Contact form broken for months. Visitor fills it in, gets thank-you message, you never receive the email. Forms break silently. Some businesses lose 30% of enquiries this way.
- SSL certificate about to expire. Browser starts showing "not secure" warnings. Trust evaporates. You find out from a customer.
- Plugins / dependencies outdated. Security CVEs accumulate. Hackers find them. You're unaware until you're hosting a phishing page.
- SEO drift. Page speed slowed. Schema fell off in a redesign. Broken internal links accumulated. Rankings slipping; nobody flagged it.
What we typically build
Proactive monitoring
Uptime checks every 5 minutes. SSL expiry alerts 30 days out. Page-speed regression alerts. Broken-link daily check. Forms verified weekly. Slack/email alerts when anything's off.
Backups + tested recovery
Daily automated backups stored in a separate region. 30-day retention. Recovery procedure documented AND tested annually (not just configured and assumed to work).
Patching & security updates
Dependency updates monthly. Critical CVE patches within 72 hours. SSL renewal automatic. WAF tuning. Pen-test recommendations when warranted.
SEO health monitoring
Schema validation, sitemap freshness, broken-link checks, Core Web Vitals tracking. Catch SEO debt before it shows in rankings.
Where it applies
- Service businesses. Trades, professional services, consultancies — websites that mainly drive enquiries via contact forms.
- Local restaurants / hospitality. Booking links, menu updates, photo updates, GBP integration.
- Local retailers (small e-commerce). Shopify / WooCommerce sites with light maintenance needs — different from full-blown e-comm dev work.
- Practice websites (legal / accounting / healthcare). Compliance-sensitive maintenance — privacy notices current, accessibility, GDPR.

Frequently asked questions
Do you maintain WordPress sites?
Yes — but honestly, modern static sites are cheaper to maintain. If you're on WordPress and not happy, we can migrate (preserving URLs and SEO) and your maintenance cost drops 30–50%.
What about Wix / Squarespace / GoDaddy?
Those platforms maintain themselves. You typically don't need monthly maintenance from us. We can audit and recommend, but ongoing maintenance on a platform-managed site is unnecessary.
Do you respond out-of-hours?
Monitoring alerts us 24/7. Essential and Standard plans: responded within 4 hours during UK business hours, next business day on weekends. Pro plan: faster response including emergency weekend coverage.
What if something breaks because of YOUR update?
We test in staging first. Production deploys are reversible. If a maintenance update breaks something, we fix it at no charge — that's on us.
Can I cancel anytime?
Monthly rolling contracts. 30-day notice to cancel. You own all credentials, code, and data throughout — no lock-in.
Do you handle small content changes?
Yes — included in Standard plan (2 hrs/month) and Pro plan (5 hrs/month). Essential plan is monitoring-only, content changes priced separately if needed.
