Website Speed Optimization in Cambridge
Get to green Core Web Vitals. Keep your conversions.
Cambridge has a high concentration of technically literate visitors who close tabs on slow pages. A slow site costs you conversions, Google rankings, and trust — simultaneously. We audit your site against Google’s Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), identify the actual bottlenecks (almost always third-party JavaScript, oversized images, render-blocking CSS, and bloated CMS themes), and remediate to a measurable score. No vague ‘make it faster’ — you get a before / after table.
The pain we keep hearing
- PageSpeed says "Poor" and you don’t know what to do. The Lighthouse report shows red bars and 100 metrics. Without context, none of it tells you what to fix first or which fixes are worth the effort.
- Third-party scripts have made the site bloated. Google Tag Manager, Hotjar, intercom, FB pixel, 3 chat widgets, 5 marketing tags — each one adds 50–300ms of blocking time. Most can be deferred, lazy-loaded, or removed entirely without losing functionality.
- Images are unoptimised. Hero images served at 4000px. PNG where AVIF/WebP would be 70% smaller. No responsive srcset. No lazy-loading. This is the single biggest LCP fix in 70% of audits.
- CMS / page builder is the bottleneck. WordPress with Elementor / Divi, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow — each adds inherent overhead. Sometimes optimisation makes the existing stack fast enough. Sometimes the right answer is a migration to a faster stack.
What we typically build
Core Web Vitals audit
Lighthouse + Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) + Web Vitals JS field data. We measure LCP, INP, CLS on lab AND real-user data. Deliverable: a prioritised report (biggest wins first) with effort/impact for each.
Image, CSS, JS optimisation pass
Image conversion (WebP/AVIF), responsive srcsets, lazy-loading, preload hints. Critical CSS inlining. JS deferral, bundle splitting, dead-code elimination. Typically gets LCP from 4–6s to 1.5–2.5s.
Third-party script audit + tag-manager rework
Tag-by-tag review of what’s loading and why. Defer or remove what doesn’t need to load on page-1. Server-side GTM where third-party performance is critical. Often the single biggest INP fix.
Hosting & CDN review
Honest assessment of whether your current hosting is the bottleneck. Sometimes the fastest improvement is moving from shared hosting to Vercel/Cloudflare Pages. Sometimes it’s tuning the existing stack.
Where it applies
- Cambridge e-commerce. Speed directly affects conversion. 100ms of LCP improvement typically lifts conversion 1–2%.
- Cambridge SaaS marketing sites. Technical visitors, technical buyers — a slow marketing site signals a slow product.
- Cambridge professional services. Speed signals quality. Slow consultancy site = slow consultancy work in many buyers’ minds.
- Cambridge biotech / research. Often heavy on imagery, diagrams, embedded video — large optimisation upside.
- Cambridge restaurants / hospitality. Mobile visitors, often in a hurry, on patchy 4G — speed is the difference between booking and bouncing.

Frequently asked questions
What scores do you actually achieve?
Typical results: LCP 4–6s → 1.5–2.5s. INP 300ms+ → sub-200ms. CLS 0.2+ → sub-0.1. Lighthouse Performance score 30–60 → 85–98. Real-world conversion lift typically 5–15% on commercial sites.
Do you work with WordPress?
Yes. Most performance issues on WordPress are theme/plugin overhead and unoptimised media — fixable without leaving WP. We will say honestly if your particular setup is past the point of optimisation and a migration would be cheaper than continued tuning.
Will you migrate us off WordPress / Wix / Squarespace?
If it makes economic sense. A static site (Astro, Next.js, Eleventy) is faster and cheaper to maintain, but the migration cost has to make sense vs the gain. We will tell you honestly.
How does this connect to SEO?
Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal. INP became one of the three CWV metrics in 2024 — many sites that ranked fine in 2023 now rank worse for ignoring INP. Speed optimisation + technical SEO go together; we usually do both.
Do you optimise for mobile specifically?
Yes — Google’s CWV are measured mostly on mobile (mobile-first indexing). 75% of optimisation effort is targeted at mobile. Desktop usually improves alongside.
Can you guarantee Lighthouse 100?
Honest answer: no. Lighthouse 100 requires removing analytics, marketing tags, fonts, third-party services. Most commercial sites realistically target 85–98. We commit to a specific, measurable target before we start work.
